| NMG Therapy Center » |
|
|
NMG Therapy Center had been initiated in an urgent situation in 2001 from a small room. There were 4 disable children at NMG Home but there was no way to provide therapy treatment. In that situation Ms Shobha Rai learned basic physiotherapy treatment method and started to run therapy service in small room.
Now NMG has its own therapy building which was constructed on the grant assistant of different donors. Since 2005 NMG Therapy Center has been giving superb service to the children and adult who are disabled mentally and physically.
Further Therapy program has been extended to Bhaktapur and Panauti of Kavre district. Everyday patient enrollment in Kathmandu Center is around 100 while there are 70 patients in Bhaktapur and Panauti who are being provided therapy treatment.
The children who are living in physical challenge have to forget their all wishes, which are very simple. They are abnormal and weakest people so they need love and care from their parents and family members. However, in the less developed countries like Nepal, people are deeply enrooted with the superstitious believes that having abnormal children is a result of evil deeds in previous life of the child and their own. They think there is no treatment and cure for such kind of problem hence the disable children are obliged to live a pitiable life. They do not get proper care including the basic rights of education, health, entertainment and so on.
In one hand, there is terrific condition of the children by birth abnormal and same fate has been leading by other all kinds of handicapped children around the country. In the experience of NMG, the financial condition of maximum mentally and physically challenged children is worse than other people. Besides poverty, most of the parents of such children are illiterate and unknown about the physiotherapy treatments, which can make their children able and confident in leading their life more conveniently.
Vision
To aware the illiterate people regarding disability as they think giving birth to disable child sin of previous life including creating opportunity for therapy treatment.
Mission
To open a platform for all the disables of Nepal with the therapy treatment.
Goal
To enable all the disable for Activities of Daily Life (ADL) and rehabilitate in society.
Objectives
Aware people about disabilities.
Make them access to the facilities available by different government and non government organizations.
Implement the activities to literate the disables.
Involve the parents in all the therapy activities so that they can transfer skill to other needy in society.
Provide therapy treatment as required irrespective of the needs age, sex and socio-economic status.
Achievement
The program has been running since 7 years.
The service has been extended to other 2 different places.
Up to now more than 500 people have got the treatment facilities while other 1500 people counseled and aware about disability.
Primary field study has been made in Pokhara valley regarding disability and about the condition of disables.
Problem being Faces
Irregularity of patients in center due to poverty because they have to pay expensive transportation cost.
The disable children have been found left by their father; in this condition mother should take all the responsibilities of children including the treatment and earning for living.
The parents are enrooted with groundless cultural belief about any kind of disability.
Because of the male dominated society, if the female child is disable the family does not approach to the hospital and follow any other treatment process.
The program has no regular donors which frequently creates problem for the management of treatment.
The existing donor has decided to reduce therapy center budget by 30% which has compelled to stop food for therapy recipient.

| • NMG Therapy Center, Kathmandu » |
|
|
This center is being run inside the premises of Nepal Matri Griha. This center always has a leading role in the treatment, care and rehabilitation of the people living with mental and physical challenges. In the initiate stage we only used to intervene the cases related with children but since 2005 all age people have come across very fine physiotherapy treatment. At present every day more than 70 out patient attend the center for physiotherapy service.
|
The major problems that have been seen till the date are:
- Cerebral Palsy(CP)
- Paralysis
- Burn case
- Polio
- Mental Retardation
- Problem in articulation
- TB
Nepal Matri Griha is planning to extend the therapy treatment in Patan and Pokhara because there are no special places for the treatment of disables and private sector is too expensive.
| In patient Service |
| NMG has decided to provide in house treatment and rehabilitation for the persons who are in need of service but not able to afford the cost for the treatment in Kathmandu. In the beginning we have a plan to provide 10 beds for the patients. This is a kind of service which one can get in a hospital. For the purpose we will manage a full time physiotherapist, a nurse and visiting doctor in the center. To start this service we just have made two spacious rooms vacant. Now we are requesting the donors to help to start this service. Although the starting cost is more, it will open an option to reconstruct NMG Therapy Center as a hospital for disables. We hope, our plan will find many human hearts who have empathy for the weaker human being of our own kind .The patients from rural areas and those who cannot access to the physiotherapy service are prioritized. Beside physiotherapy service the patient will get simple medical service through NMG Clinic Center. |
|
| Therapy Training to Parents |
NMG provides this type of training to the mothers who have children facing the life of mental and physical challenge. The training will be given to them without taking any charge. The mothers will be provided the facilities of residence during the training period. After identification of the case, every month such mothers are invited for training. In the beginning they are given one month training and sent back to their own respective village/city and then after, time to time if necessary, they are called for additional follow up course and encouraged them to transfer the skill among other persons who are in dire need of such skill and knowledge.
After the completion of the project, NMG expects physiotherapy service accessible to every children living in mental and physical challenges in their own locality. In addition, there would be sufficient awareness regarding the importance of love, care, possible precaution before, after and while giving birth of baby including the necessity of physiotherapy to the abnormal persons.
Up to now 5 such mothers from different places already got this training and now they are independent to provide physiotherapy to their differently able children.
However, this project still has not been funded so we are looking forward your help. If any one interested please click on To become a donor. |

| Splint and Cast |
This service is also newly started because it has been found very difficult for the patients to over come the contracture and deformities of joints and muscles with out it. For maintaining proper function of the joints and muscles splints are very much useful. For the purpose, the patients affected part is plastered then joints and muscles are brought into correct form. This is very important service that requires correcting the joints and muscles of any needy. We are also in need of regular funding to continue this service.
NMG has facility of preparing the splint using plaster of Paris (POP) because we do not have our own work shop to make other different appliances. If any case appeared regarding the orthosis then we referred to the professional workshop. But it is very expensive which poor parents cannot afford. Therefore it needs fund to make splint and cast service accessible to poor. |
|
| Home Service for Poor Disable |
Home service is targeted for the persons with physical disability and unable to approach the center .There are 30 persons getting home service in Kathmandu, 25 persons in Bhaktapur and other 30 in Panauti center.
We provide the home service to the needy due to the following reasons:
More weight and age parents cant make into the center with the needy.
Far way from the center.
Some needy have single parent and do not have time to take the needy for treatment.
For poor family maximum time is required for daily life living activity hence they cant attend the center.
Note: This program has not been refunded this year. |
|
| Sponsorship for poor disable |
It is a fact that so many children with disability are not getting physiotherapy treatment due to their weak financial condition. In one hand they are poor and in the other they are ignorance about the treatment. They do not show any interest for the therapy treatment because it is expensive in private sector as government service is not accessible every where. Therefore we have started to find the individual or institutional donors for the treatment of poor disable children.
We are seeking sponsorship for:
Daily therapy treatment.
Simple medication.
Nutritious food in the day time.
Educational materials for the children with mild problem or those who can study. |
|
| Counseling Service |
We provide special counseling, especially to the guardians of disables because all the parents/ guardians are not equally conscious about disabilities. This service is divided into 3 parts:
Counseling to parents: Parents of disable persons may not be aware about the disability, its care and treatment so they need counseling. Similarly it is also needed to take the parents out from confusion, misconception of disability and superstitious belief on the issue. Therefore parents are counseled before starting the therapy treatment.
Counseling to the needy: The persons with disability are also counseled because some persons are fine mentally. If the needy themselves are counseled then the treatment and its outcome will be good.
Counseling to persons with mental complication: Many people are found depressed, sad and confused due to various reasons which can be creating great problem to lead life. They are also free to come and get counseled in free of cost. |
|
| Education for disable children |
| NMG intends to assimilate the children in education irrespective of their physical and social condition. However all the time is difficult to keep the differently able children with absolutely normal. Therefore to prepare the abnormal children for the educational pursuits we have managed the co-ed class in the therapy center itself. At present 25 such children are studying in therapy class. Here they enjoy with drawing, different games, music including formal academic course book. |

|
|
Bhaktapur is the smallest district of Nepal. It is situated to the north east of Kathmandu. The Bhaktapur center is about 20 km far away from Gongabu. Although this district is closer to Kathmandu, people are still backward and illiterate in many places. There are 2 municipalities while rest part of the district is full of villages. The total area is dominated by Newar community many of whom do not understand Nepali language.
NMG has studied the condition of disables there before the establishment of the center in April 2007.
We found that CBR Bhaktapur working there with Bhaktapur Jysis but they reach in the field rarely and do not treat the persons above 16 years. Then the patients conditions become worse. When we were in the field survey the guardians requested us to start the service. Now there are 55 patients getting service through the center including 25 home services.
Currently we are working in the coordination of like minded non government organizations, schools and government bodies to approach the needy persons in Bhaktapur district.

| • NMG Therapy Center, Panauti » |
|
|
Panauti is small city of Kavre district which is located in about 40 km away from Kathmandu. Although it is a town all most people of this area are farmer and level of education is still low. There are many disables beyond the city area. People are less conscious about disability, nutrition and treatment for disables. They need counseling and awareness activities to bring them up from every kind of ignorance.
Recently our center is providing therapy service to more than 50 disable persons including more than 30 home services.
The Panauti center still has not received fund for the efficient operation. Due to severe financial crisis once it was closed but we took it into operation by great difficulties. If it is funded then so many needy will be benefited.
