About Nepal Matri Griha (NMG)

Genesis and Motivation
NMG is an abbreviation for Nepal Matri Griha (Mothers’ Home). Founded in February 2000 A.D. by a bunch of young women who lived through an abusive, cruel and ugly childhood, rolled up their sleeves to change the way the things are and set themselves on path of change. For NMG the victim and the vulnerable are nearly always the women and children. In Nepal, women are still discriminated against culturally, socially and economically. The socio-cultural structure is constructed in a way that debars them from accessing to and controlling over resource. Though through 11th amendment in Civil Code the State has sought to end gender-based discriminations by abrogating few discriminatory provisions, which has ameliorated the situation for women to some extent, the equality between men and women is still a far cry.

Similarly, children in Nepal, particularly those orphaned, displaced, and driven by the armed conflict, and those who have been victim of family breakdowns, alcoholic abuses and other forms of domestic abuses, are highly vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, trafficking and bonded laboring.

Though the country has neatly worded laws and rights provisions in favor of children, Kathmandu’s streets, sub-ways and overhead bridges are swarmed with children in rags, filthy looking and emaciated exposed to all sorts of risk. In one of the world’s poorest country ravaged by 12 years old armed conflict, women and children, particularly those who bore the full brunt of conflict, remain worst affected. NMG believes this gloomy scenario must change, and these people must be shown light of hope for change. For this purpose the young, energetic and change-seeking young women came together to form an organization which they registered with the District Administration Office under NGO registration Act 2031 and affiliated it with Social Welfare Council, the Government Apex body created to coordinate and monitor development interventions by non-government organizations. The philanthropic journey spanning over 8 years earned NMG trust, recognition, and gained credence to its works. Now, NMG has scores of big hearted, empathizing donors who stretch out helping hands to keep its good works going.
Where is NMG located ?
NMG is located at Gongabu-9, Bhandari Gaon, Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. The project office and its facilities are located about 3 km north from the city’s tourist hub, Thamel.

What goal NMG chases ?
Nepal one of the poorest countries plunged into a kind of civil war in which the Maoists armed rebels and State machinery fought fierce battle for past 12 years. This left hundreds of thousands people displaced, thousands of innocent people killed and maimed, children orphaned, and women abused, exploited and driven away.

NMG is certainly no match to the mammoth problems and challenges rendered by the conflict or resulting from chronic poverty. Losing one’s limb in landmines, or left paralyzed by an accident, or being booby-trapped to cripple, is not one’s own making nor is divine retribution for past sins as people tend to think in the country.

NMG believes that every woman and every single child has natural right bestowed upon them by their maker to live in peace, bliss and dignity. No human being has rights or authorities to debar them from enjoying those rights. With this conviction and determination NMG is moving forward to enable every vulnerable and victim women and children gain a secured and safe life. The 12 years conflict and aggravated economic hardships forced many women and children flee villages and seek refuge in the cities where they are often met with abuse, exploitations, sexual slavery and bondage-laboring. NMG wants to save them from being abused and exploited at the hands of unscrupulous people.
